Censorship is an extremely controversial topic, many people think that censorship goes too far, and then there are many people who say it doesn't go far enough. Most people agree that censorship is the control of information and ideas that circulate within a society. There are four different reasons why a book can be banned; political, sexual, social and religious. When a book crosses the limit by hitting politics, society, religion or is too sexually vulgar, the books are placed on the banned books list. I feel like there isn't much in society nowadays that can be hidden from today's youth, mostly because of the internet. I believe that there should be no censorship on books and above all they should not be banned because society has progressively worsened. With the things children do and see in their daily lives, a book will be their last influence in doing or thinking something bad. Censorship on books is absurd nowadays because young people have the Internet to surf, so banning books is useless. There are a high number of banned books including Cather in the Rye, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and To Kill a Mockingbird. The banning of Harry Potter was for religious reasons; promotes witchcraft which the Bible says all of God's people should have nothing to do with. The Lord of the Rings was banned mainly because it was deemed irreligious, but it was banned in England because of all the smoking the characters do. To Kill a Mockingbird was considered "classic literature" (4) but was still banned due to all the racial content, vulgarity, and references to rape. Catcher in the Rye, the whole reason I'm writing this article has been accused of being "anti-white and being... the center of the paper... for whatever information they want or need.
