Topic > Understanding Anorexia Nervosa: Causes and Consequences

In 2001, the American Anorexia and Bulimia Association found that of those who develop eating disorders, approximately 150,000 die from anorexia. It has the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders (White 219). Eating disorders are complex conditions that can arise from a variety of potential causes. People with anorexia nervosa have a real fear of weight gain and a distorted view of their body size and shape. As a result, adolescents with anorexia limit food intake through dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise. Others with anorexia may begin to binge and purge, eating a lot of food and then trying to get rid of the calories by forcing themselves to vomit, using laxatives, or exercising excessively, or a combination of these, which also leads to bulimia. People with anorexia nervosa have real fears about gaining weight and what body size or shape category they fall into. As a result, these individuals with anorexia nervosa limit the amount of food they eat in different ways, for example; diet, fasting, or strenuous exercise. This disorder can also lead to binge eating and purging, which means eating large amounts of food at one time and then causing your body to regurgitate the food. This leads to problems with bulimia. As a result, anorexia nervosa develops from multiple problems related to lack of education; interpersonal, psychological and social factors. Education about these factors will increase awareness, which will in turn decrease the development of anorexia nervosa. Lack of education about interpersonal factors related to anorexia nervosa has been a driving force toward not recognizing the broad causes of anorexia. People who suffer from anorexia often have problematic personal relationships. As said by Michael...... middle of paper....... This standard of beauty has pushed everyone to look like these false and unattainable individuals. Because society believes it doesn't know any better and thinks these images are normal, the human body must somehow contort itself into this fashion. The density of the world continues to let these harmful images be broadcast when, in reality, there needs to be a true voice in society that says there is nothing wrong with how someone looks. To conclude, in the context of eating disorders, the complexity of anorexia nervosa that arises derives from multiple reasons. Anorexia nervosa resulted from these and has turned into a critical problem in society. Without education in each of the factors, interpersonal, psychological and social, anorexia will remain a prevalent problem that continues a self-perpetuating cycle of physical and emotional destruction..
