Every day a woman you know wonders if she's gotten pregnant. This is a common concern for most women and one that will never be completely abolished. In the story “The Hills Like White Elephants,” Ernest Hemingway addresses the topic of abortion with great subtlety. She never mentions the word “abortion” or “pregnancy,” but her story fluidly illustrates the indecision and tension between two young people. The American is firm in stating that having an abortion is “perfectly simple”, while the girl who we assume is his girlfriend is much more thoughtful about the situation. Today, women in the United States are fortunate to have the option to have an abortion if they choose to do so, but many men still debate whether or not the father should have a say in what happens to his unborn child. Since it's a woman's body and she makes all the decisions, does that mean she's the only one responsible to deal with the repercussions of her actions? Should a man worry if he got a woman pregnant? If it is a woman's right to decide what to do with the fetus, is it a man's responsibility to ensure that she does not need to have an abortion in the first place? It is easy for a man to say that there is nothing in an abortion, but for a woman to have an abortion means having something taken away from her. It's not only physically taxing, but the hormonal changes and emotions that accompany it are heartbreaking. I fully support a woman's right to choose, but I believe it is extremely important for men to fully understand all aspects of sex and its consequences. It is the responsibility of every sexually active person to be educated on how to go paperless for their own health and not risk the health of others for their own primitive desires.
