The word emptiness can be defined as: lack of purpose or substance; meaningless. Faced with this void, we can react in many different ways to fill it. Fantasy, denial and substance abuse are just some of the responses to this feeling. However, these reactions still fail to address the issue at hand. Francis Weed and Zoe Hendricks both deal with fears related to this feeling. These two characters embody the word emptiness and both handle these emotions in different ways. They don't seem to live life to the fullest, hampered by their own internal problems. Leading them both to express this suppression differently. By analyzing them together, we will finally be able to find the key to their happiness. After a near-death experience, Francis Weed discovers a new perspective on life. While he didn't necessarily see the “light at the end of the tunnel,” the experience changed him. He had previously lived a prototypical suburban life. However, the superficial society that is “Shady Hill” is now fueling its void. His wife Julia prefers to gossip about the latest social gathering rather than worry about his feelings. These things combine to form a crucible for Francis, leading him to act in ways he never has before. On the other hand, Zoe Hendricks is just an ordinary history professor from the Mid-West. As is the case with most history buffs, she is a gregarious and awkward woman. Zoe seems to be fueled by sarcasm, even though she believes it's just irony. This misunderstanding makes it a difficult match for potential teammates. His failed courtship attempts shed light on his social problems. He seems to simply be living life on cruise control, nonchalantly taking care of the future. While the younger sister is on the verge of getting married... middle of paper... these stories describe an issue that resonates in current times. Many people can identify with the emptiness that both Zoe and Francis endure due to not realizing their true happiness. The “pursuit of happiness” is something that every human being pursues. By repressing this search, the flame that engulfs both characters is fueled. It might be better if Zoe had to go through a near-death experience. This may lead her to finally change her mindset about life; providing her with the information she needs to change her life for the better. It could be the thing that kickstarts her evolution as a human, freeing her from the internal chains that imprison her. Perhaps then he will be able to free himself from the expansion of life; providing her with the strength necessary to discover true happiness. “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” - Albert Einstein
