In January 2010, President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union Address. In the speech, Obama talks about many things he has accomplished in the past year and hopes to accomplish in the next year. The first thing he wants to accomplish is healthcare reform. The next issue he has to realize is the budget. Then, Obama talks about some bills and policies he would like to implement. The ones that were specifically brought up were the climate bill and cap-and-trade. Finally, they share their opinions and perceptions about Obama and his administration. In the Washington Post, Will and Gerson discuss the State of the Union address. In these works the authors agree both on the speech and on the messages sent to the American. In Will's article he points out that the president arrives almost halfway before presenting the topic. Both Will and Gerson quote the president when he admits that he did not explain the issue clearly to the American people. Will presents the information and says the president implies that the American people are slow learners. He also points out that the topic of government health care is out there as is information about reform, and people still don't like the president's proposal. Gerson says: “If only Obama had made a few more speeches, Americans would have been freed from their misconceptions.” Gerson appears sarcastic in this statement and also points out that the president lacks sympathy. Both writers have a tone about healthcare reform, but Will says the president is calling Americans incompetent and Gerson says no matter how much information is presented in the reform, it won't be. The first issue discussed in the speech was healthcare reform. The next topic was the budget and another stimulus. Then, Obama addressed some bills and policies, most notably the climate bill and cap-and-trade. Finally, the author's views on Obama and his views on his administration. Both Will and Gerson handle the State of the Union address.
