Growing up in an extremely conservative church I was taught that there was a very specific way of living and behaving. An example of this was that women were not allowed to wear trousers; this behavior was not unusual for anyone in my church, and was not something that struck me, until I was placed in public school. The first day I wore a long skirt because I was raised to believe that this was the most modest option for a girl. At school all the girls wore trousers and I immediately judged them and assumed that they were immodest because of it. Brislin et al (2006) point out that many people engaging in school or business activities in a diverse environment find that if cultural intelligence is lacking, these ventures may have negative outcomes. These misjudgments and misinterpretations often stem from a lack of self-awareness of how culture dictates values and beliefs (Quappe & Cantatore, 2005). Over the years, I have come to a better understanding of myself and can see how my lack of self-awareness and intelligence dictate my behavior when faced with people different from me.
