Topic > Faith in religion and science - 1139

Since the dawn of humanity, religion has been one of the most significant elements of a society's social and cultural beliefs and actions. However, this trend has diminished due to the general increase in knowledge regarding our natural sciences. Where we once attributed something we didn't understand to the workings of a higher power, it is now replaced by a simple explanation offered by the natural sciences. While supporters of religion may question the natural sciences by claiming that they are based on assumptions, it is important to note that the natural sciences are based on theories and principles that can be demonstrated using mathematical equations and formulas. Faith however contrasts with the easily visible feasibility of the data considering Natural Sciences as faith is simply believing without substantial evidence. While belief in religion has helped individuals make morally right choices in the past, belief in religion has also led to unfounded actions by followers. Meanwhile, faith in the natural sciences has been consistently harmful since nothing in the natural sciences can be established without evidence that coincides with the rest of the laws of nature. Belief in natural sciences has hindered human development for centuries because of the faith in religion of some early religious bodies. One of the best examples is the belief that the Universe was geocentric, or that the Earth was the center of the universe. The Church, through its faith in both religion and the natural sciences, has confirmed the Earth's position through the claims of the Bible. Meanwhile, Galileo Galilei discovered that the Earth was not geocentric but rather heliocentric, not by faith but through scientific methods. The theories of the Catholic Church... half of the document ...... of the time were created by the belief in the religion that was the predominant authority in previous periods, and therefore previous modern science could only be seen as a credible argument if seen with faith. We would still use faith to understand natural events if it were not for the shift in power from faith in religion to human reasoning and logic. All in all, I believe that while faith in religion and science may sometimes seem harmless and beneficial, the risks are great and misunderstandings and misrepresentations of the facts have occurred several times throughout history. Faith in the natural sciences is not substantiated as the natural sciences require scientific methodology to make any statement legitimate; however religion contrasts in the way it offers "answers to mysteries" that cannot be found - and therefore cannot be proven.
