Topic > Belief Conformity - 1668

As a critical mental state in social psychology, conformity has been studied as a view of how the presence of other people can force an individual to go against the norms of society towards the adopted norms of a other individual. This is evident in the 19th century, when Solomon Asch and Muzafer Sherif investigated the phenomenon of conformity and its effects on human behavior. However, none of these individuals could explain how perception could be altered without an individual's physical presence. This is significant today with my experiences where I have conformed to certain ideas through information provided by an authority figure. Initially, as technology improved; With the development of modern computers and the Internet, a person can express his ideas without physical contact. This is evident through the use of; blogs, social networks and YouTube, which helps a person express their opinion in a way that persuades the general public to abandon their ideas and adopt their own. One way this is evident in my life is through my experiences of being persuaded by information, which led me to adopt incorrect beliefs about my surroundings. My main example is when I emigrated from the Republic of Malta to Canada, where through my fears I imagined that the environment would mimic that of the stereotypes associated with Canada. Another experience was upon my return to Malta, after living in Canada for ten years believing that Malta was significantly different from when I left. Therefore, through the analysis of my experiences, it will be determined that for compliance to occur the person must be persuaded to adopt an idea outside of their norm, ulti...... middle of paper..... . ces is the principle of cognitive heuristics. Cognitive heuristics are mental shortcuts we make when processing information. These mental shortcuts can lead to incorrect beliefs, also caused by information or lack of information (Wittlesea and Williams, 2001). In conclusion, conformity does not only occur when there is the physical presence of someone who persuades an individual to adopt his or her belief(s). In today's society, with all the technological advantages available, physical contact is no longer necessary to force people to conform to their beliefs. For example, the Egyptian uprising against President Honsi Mubarak in 2011 was instigated by Twitter, and the Egyptian people rose up against their oppressive leader. If it weren't for Twitter, already disgruntled Egyptians would not have conformed to the idea that change was necessary for their nation's progress.
