1. Describe some actions governments have taken to ensure that people are safer and healthier today than they were 100 years ago. What should government do in our time to ensure that people are safer and healthier in the next 50 years and why? Over the last 100 years the government has taken actions to ensure a safer and healthier today. The first example that comes to mind is the numerous smoking regulations that have come into play. The Center for Disease and Prevention states, “Smoke-free laws that prohibit smoking in all indoor areas of an establishment completely protect nonsmokers from inadvertent exposure to SHS indoors” (CDC, 2015). In addition to that, the CDC also explains secondhand smoke (SHS), stating that “exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) causes lung cancer and cardiovascular and respiratory disease in nonsmoking adults and children, resulting in approximately 46,000 deaths per heart disease and 3,400 lung cancer deaths among nonsmoking adults in the United States each year” (CDC, 2015). While this is not something that all states have implemented, it is something that for many of us has enabled a healthier today. Another recent example includes nutrition labels. The FDA states, “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring that foods sold in the United States are safe, wholesome, and properly labeled” (Food Label Guide, 2014). Thanks to this law we are able to easily see the ingredients and nutritional values of the food we eat. The FDA is not only responsible for nutrition labels, but also inspects our food to ensure it is healthy, tests our water, and filters to limit the amount of chemicals put into the air, just to name a few. Overall, smoking and eating regulations are just a few things to do... halfway through the document... link took me to the site with many options to choose from, including youth nutrition, l nutrition for all and food service guidelines, to name a few. With this information I will be able to better understand nutrition and enable a healthier future. Food labeling guide cited from Works. June 20, 2014. Web.
