This area protects unique plants, animals and geographic features. Fox Island has seven miles of trails throughout the preserve. These routes allow visitors to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the park. Fox Island also has over six miles of cross-country skiing trails in the winter and is available when there is more than four inches of snow on the ground. Nature Center programs are available for fun or as home study credit. Fox Island State Wildlife Refuge contains marshes and marshes that border a forested dune. The dune is the result of the decline of the Wisconsin glacier. The reserve is home to over 190 species of birds. The diverse terrestrial and aquatic forms create an assortment of plant societies, which support the animals. Black oak, white oak, black walnut, wild cherry, willow, cottonwood, and sycamore all provide shade in the preserve. In the northwestern part of the reserve, wetlands contain open water surrounded by vegetation. The reserve also contains old camps in a number of later phases. The nature center is a charming log cabin and contains a conference room and large and small classrooms. All rooms in the nature center are available for rent.
