They would do anything to keep the slaves. They even had a doctor make up a disease to make it seem like black people had to be slaves, like they couldn't take care of themselves. They tried to use the Bible to justify their actions. Which, of course, anyone who reads the Bible should know that slavery is wrong. All they had to do was go back to the story of Moses. Luckily there were blacks ready to stand up and fight. People like Frederick Douglass and David Walker spoke out about slavery. Their voices were heard by northerners. The South still wanted slaves and so went to war. At the end of the war, slavery was finally abolished. So, back to the question, did they have to fight? Yep, there was no way around it.
