As we walk through life, we pass by people with invisible scars; people who have faced the unimaginable, but the remains remain hidden and hidden beyond what our eyes can perceive. Enormous triumphs, exultations and tribulations are the basis of every unspeakable testimony. Very often the experiences of abuse survivors have been denied, trivialized or distorted; but the truth cannot be denied. Because if there is light, darkness cannot exist. Both “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and the autobiography “Scars Don't Hurt” by Margaret and Blake Davidson deeply immerse the reader in the world of sexual abuse and the suffering it produces; however, those who are abused prevail and thrive despite their circumstances. The autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" reveals Maya Angelou's traumatic childhood. Maya is continually disciplined with beatings that are referred to as "biblical approaches" by Mom (her grandmother) and her Uncle Willie. She is raped, which ushers in the beginning of her pain, grief, and misery, but also transforms her into a powerful woman. “Scars Don’t Hurt” follows a similar pattern. Margaret Davidson's childhood was filled with fear and abuse. In his vulnerability he finds true inner resilience and the restoration of his beliefs. Throughout both books, family situations and relationships, the victim suffering devastating abuse, and the need to overcome horrific conditions are closely linked, showing how some victims gain an unshakable solidity in the face of life's catastrophic storms. life or soon find yourself without parents, sometimes with no one but yourself. They travel through life desperately looking for a......half paper......sister, domineering, capable of guiding the brother who had taken so much from me. What had started with absolute pain had turned into something beautiful.” (pg. 361) His deep wounds were healed; simple scars now—scars that don't hurt—that serve to remind others that God heals all. The ship of life may or may not take you sailing on calm and lovely seas, and the difficult days of existence may or may not be bright and promising. But if you maintain an attitude of perseverance and insist on maintaining integrity, nothing can dim the light that shines within you. Both Davidson's and Angelou's lives were built on shaky foundations that needed to be torn away and rebuilt on solid ground. The struggle for liberation is a journey on a seemingly endless road that always fades into the distance; yet it is attainable by those who are willing and steadfast.
