Many students don't know how to apply rhetoric. Students know how to write to a specific audience and for a specific purpose. Many students only know the audience and purpose, so they don't apply all the rhetorical steps. Many students are unaware of rhetoric, so students don't know how to give character to their writing. More simply, they don't know how to add character to their writing. Furthermore, students do not know how to be persuasive. In other words, students do not provide enough information to convince the audience or reader to agree with the author. Additionally, students do not know their rhetorical choices, and context can influence their writing. Therefore, new college student writers should gain rhetorical awareness, because they will learn how using language and rhetoric can help them write focused essays. Rhetoric is how new college student writers use language. According to Sylvia Morales, English professor and author of the pamphlet “The Rhetorical Situation”, she believes that rhetoric is “the art of using language effectively and persuasively” (1). When students are persuasive, they are able to convince the audience and the reader. For example, when I want to persuade my audience, I provide examples that they can identify with and understand. More simply, students must provide enough information to convince the reader to agree with their point of view. Additionally, students need to be informative when they are persuasive. In other words, they provide evidence and support to persuade the audience to agree with their points of view. Furthermore, when students use language effectively, they achieve the desired goal. In other words, they achieved their goal. For example, when college students studied…middle of the paper…character definition is just one step toward rhetorical awareness. Additionally, students can write targeted articles if they choose a specific audience and purpose. More simply, writing for a specific audience and purpose is easier, because students need to focus only on certain people for a certain reason. Additionally, students should know how rhetorical choices and context are similar, because new college student writers must make decisions about their writing. Additionally, students should learn how to be persuasive and use language effectively. If students learn more about rhetoric, they will continue to write essays that do not convince the audience and reader to agree with their opinions. In other words, if students remain unfamiliar with rhetoric, their writing will not improve. Overall, rhetorical awareness can help new college student writers with their writing.
