“Educational System”High school is a place where you grow physically and mentally. In high school you start as a freshman and graduate as a senior. A lot happens during that time in life and you are constantly learning as you grow. But I know that many high schools, including mine, are not perfect and have flaws in their education system, which can be fixed to provide a better environment for learning. Learning is a never-ending process that we draw from our personal experiences. While Americans believe in our education system, there appear to be many problems that we are unaware of that have a negative effect on our students as a whole. One of the problems the education system faces is the barrier between school and life. Schools must break down barriers to connecting, going to school to learn, and living your life. Students should be told that learning doesn't stop after the bell rings or it's time to go, it happens all the time. In “School Is Bad for Children,” John Holt states, “'Come to school to learn,' we tell him, as if the child had never learned before, as if life were out there and learning was here, and there is no connection between the two” (34). I think schools sometimes play the role of separation from life because they impose the rule of "come to school to learn" and that's it. Children come to school curious to learn with other people, especially other children, but when school teaches them to be indifferent they lose interaction with the world. Holt explains: “You could say that school is one long lesson in how to switch off, which may be one reason why so many young people, seeking the awareness of the world and responsiveness to it that they had when they were little, think they can find it only in drugs” (35). Having the student disconnect from the real world, i.e. life, allows students to believe that drugs are ok, which is bad. School and life are connecting topics because you live your life while attending school, which can affect how you learn. Problems and other situations that occur in your life can cause you to lose focus, which affects how you learn. Letting school and learning connect will break the barrier and create a better environment for students to function.
