Beep! Beep! Beep! Aww it's that time already! I don't want to get up yet! Can I skip the first period? This is the sound you hear in a teenager's room every morning before school. Then they drag their sleepy bodies into the bathroom to get ready for the day. Once they're showered and ready for the day, they get in the car and drive to school, half asleep. It doesn't seem very safe. Then students go to class and try to learn and remember the things they were taught while their bodies are still trying to rest. When test time comes, students are unable to remember what they were taught when they arrived at school because their bodies were too tired to process what they were learning. When school starts this early in the morning, teenagers' bodies are not ready to get up and learn something that they will be asked to remember later. “A student's natural clock is not set for a bright, early start” (Eveleth). Which is true, after puberty teenagers' bodies are "programmed" to stay up late at night and get up later in the morning, making it difficult for them to concentrate in school when they are forced against the "natural conformation of their body" to sleep in.” Instead they have to get up early and go to school. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said that "studies have shown that students perform better if they start the school day rested, and that while a later start time might be problematic for bus schedules, it is 'common sense ' which tells him that teenagers have difficulty waking up early and getting to the buses,” he also added that it is not his decision, it is up to each individual school (Varma-White). can excel in school because their bodies are not ready for it. Teens are forced to get up, s...... middle of paper ...... that teens scores on standardized math tests and reading increased by two or three percentile points when the start time was moved from 7:30 to 8:30” (Varma-White) It is no secret that adolescents would benefit from a later school start time, ed it is also obvious that it would be a no-brainer for schools and bus services to simply update and change their timetables. Although it may be a hassle for schools and parents, it is of great interest to students to give them the best opportunity to learn, because after all they are our future and we want them to be well educated.
