Tobacco addiction contributes to approximately 438,000 deaths each year in the United States2, and cigarette smoking is one of the most common preventable causes of death, according to the report3. Tobacco use kills five million people a year worldwide, another source points out4. Quitting smoking, or at least reducing it, for example, could significantly reduce the onset of coronary heart disease and other forms of cardiovascular disease.1,5 These diseases that can be prevented or reduced include heart attack, stroke, hypertension, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, spasm coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmia.1 However, quitting smoking proves difficult for most smokers2. Soon after a person begins to quit smoking, along with the symptoms that accompany nicotine withdrawal, they may experience a number of short-term effects such as weight gain, irritability and anxiety.2,3,5 Ways to quit smoking smoking include "cold turkey," step-by-step manuals, advice, or medical products can help replace or reduce nicotine addiction.3 Advertisers, including pharmaceutical companies, routinely market a variety of smoking cessation products, scientifically " proven" to help a person quit smoking.6 These products, however, cannot do the “work” necessary to quit smoking.7 However, the use of particular smoking cessation products can help the smoker, who is determined to stop smoking, feel more comfortable and in control as you adapt your habits to quit smoking.8,9,10The development of smoking cessation drugs dates back to 1971, when Pharmacia developed the first nicotine replacement product for quit smoking, a chewing gum enriched with nicotine.11 Ensuring that modern nicotine replacement products can help alleviate this ...... half of the document ...... 13 April 2009.
