People will argue that having a low paying job and freedom is better than a well paying job and a 60 hour work week. However, many, including myself, do not share the view of Hal Niedzviecki's essay “Stupid Jobs Are Good for Relaxing.” Having higher pay and longer hours provides much more income and allows for much more financial freedom. This freedom can help you bring much more happiness into your life than the lower-paid workweek. Hal Niedzviecki mentions many advantages of easy jobs with low-paying workweeks in the following statement. For several years now I have relied on stupid jobs to earn my way in the world. This isn't because I'm a stupid person. In contrast, dumb jobs are a way to avoid the brain-numbing idiocy of full-time work. They are the next best thing to having no job. They will keep you sane and smart. (Niedzviecki 1971 p. 5) With this in mind, having a nice sum of money saved brings peace of mind through financial security. As well as being able to indulge in many more activities and expensive items. With a higher paying job and longer hours you can also afford a much better retirement and have more money to spend on your family. Both types of jobs have a stark difference in income, hours, and the future of your career and life. First let's talk about a notable difference between these working weeks and their income. Having a well-paying job makes you much more money every hour, giving you much greater financial freedom. This allows you to help pay for the important things in life like your children, a better home, and so much more. So with a low paid work week you are limited more on what you can spend your money on. Hal Niedzviecki said: “Despite being ten years old… half the paper… right? Additionally, in most low-paying jobs there isn't much room for promotion. Ultimately, low-paid work leaves you with little savings and little cash to spend, as well as poor retirement funds, just as high-paid work secures your future and leaves room for improvement. Bottom line, having a low paying job and freedom won't win. It won't offer you anything luxurious and it won't give you a higher quality life experience outside of work. Whereas well-paying jobs and 60-hour work weeks provide you with the financial security that brings peace of mind and luxury to your life. In the future you will be able to make a career and secure a future not only for yourself but also for your loved ones. Therefore, taking a well-paying 60-hour-a-week job is the best choice anyway.
