“The Rocking Horse Winner” by DH Lawrence is a story about the bond between a boy and his rocking horse. Little boy Paul has a rocking horse he's growing up on, but he rides it anyway. He was born into a greedy family and has two younger sisters. In this story, Paul is taught about the way his family values money, the luck that runs in his blood, and how gambling changes people. Paul's mother is told that “she's a really good mother. He loves his children. (Lawrence, 2001) However, children and their mother know in their hearts that this is not true. The mother values money more than family. The love that was once in his heart has “turned to dust” (Lawrence, 2001). He doesn't care much about his children and they are not on his priority list. She married for love, not luck; however he feels he cannot love his children.
