In simpler terms, you either take the plea deal or you die. Most people would confess to witchcraft, even if it were a false confession, just so they could live. I know I would, and so did others in my class. In The Crucible, Proctor, accused of witchcraft, says, “I want my life…I will have my lie” (Miller). He immediately says that he is willing to lie to save his life and live in prison for confessing to a lie just so he won't be hanged. However, Proctor changes his mind and says, "Pray to God that he will speak something good to me. Don't give them tears. Show them a heart of stone and sink them with it" (Miller). He has come to the conclusion that being a witch is not what he wants to be remembered for, as it is a lie. He then says he thinks those who falsely confessed should have a consequence for doing so. However, the court did not even examine whether the confessors were lying; they simply trusted them, which a court should not do. An example where plea bargaining was accepted instead of the death penalty is the case of James Troutman. He confessed to killing, raping and brutalizing the body after killing a nine-year-old girl. For his actions he deserves the death penalty, but for some reason the court offered him a plea deal to plead guilty and serve life in prison without parole. Even when the condemned
