Break down coping mechanisms used by Black women to deal with discrimination, such as “complaining” and fighting back. The authors provide answers and offer examples of how women can reconnect with their true selves by seeking career counseling, starting their own business, joining support groups, starting their own business, or taking other productive actions. Black women's willpower in the face of adversity, their ability to emphasize the positive, and their resilience are all assets that can contribute to their well-being. The focus on family, close relationships, community, and church is very important to the strength of Black women. These connections have served as sources of empowerment that support Black women's self-esteem. The power of social support they represent has been very important as a line of defense in often hostile external environments. These social systems have helped ease the depression and stress of women who juggle career and family obligations and face racism and discrimination.
