Topic > What makes a house a home for me

Every house can be a home. For us, a home is a home that includes pieces of community, family, memories, culture and laughter. A home is a place where people help each other overcome anxieties, find comfort in sorrows and rejoice in success. A place where everyone can feel safe, happy, relaxed and at ease. A physical structure with a roof, front door and windows, parents, siblings and a furry pet. However, what makes my house a home is walking in the front door on a Friday evening after praying zuhr in the mosque and returning to the aroma of delicious freshly cooked biryani in the kitchen because my mother knows it is my favorite dish. The thing I love about home is that it's your little place where you can come and forget reality even just for a little while. My home is not a structure that protects me and in which I live, my home is always with me, no matter what. The emotion I feel when I return home after a hectic semester is indescribable because that is where I relax mentally and psychically. When I walk and just look, I can hear memories echoing off the walls. Sweet memories. The place where we all know the best hiding places when we played hide and seek as children. Home is the influence that transforms children into capable young adults. A place that protected me and shaped me into a person capable of entering the world. Every inch of the house contains feelings and emotions from some moment in life. Walking in reminds me of all those times I came back from soccer practice. The living room reminds me of all my friends and family. Preserved within the walls are memories of birthdays, deaths, good times and bad times. It all pushes me to work harder as an individual to be the best I can be. After leaving the house for long periods of time, I noticed that I always missed two things: coming home and talking to my sister and finding out what was going on during the day, saying goodnight to my parents, and then crawling into my bed. A house becomes home when the smell is familiar, there are pictures of memories along the walls and when the people you love fill it. I went from house to house several times and in each one I felt "at home". I feel "at home" even at my grandparents' house, and even at the house of some dear friends. For me, a home is a feeling of comfort and familiarity that comes when you are surrounded by those you love and care for. Works Cited Johnson, M. (2021).
