In this essay I want to share what I learned in the art appreciation course. Since our class is almost over, instead of using books and whatnot, we have learned to appreciate art in different ways during this semester. Projects such as class discussions, presentations, online work and analysis of different works of art. However, the readings given by our professor provided us with the basic knowledge and terminologies that we should know to appreciate art. This is the fundamental requirement so that one can later know the art in depth. Despite this typical learning method, we also visited museums, in fact, these gave us the opportunity to expand what we learned from our teacher and from the readings/newspapers she gave us, together with how to use these new artistic concepts and the sense of analysis when faced with a true work of art. Analyzing Baroque and Renaissance artworks was fun but also sad because most of the works depict the struggle and hardships of people in that era. The works are inspired by the wars and painful events that happen in this period. One of the paintings we analyzed in the Renaissance period is the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Another painting is The Rape and Massacre at Ermita which portrays how brutal the Japanese soldiers were towards the Filipinos. Women were raped and killed, men massacred, and some even said children were thrown into the air and impaled on the point of bayonet. It not only describes the horror that Filipinos were going through at that time and how cruel the soldiers are towards them, but also how they entered our country thinking that we were no better than them. This painting still lives its legacy for our generation to understand that history will haunt us eternally. All the acts of courage, the unheard cries and the bloodshed are ones we should not forget. According to the eternal line, “issues of the past should not be an issue of the present.” But not for Philippine history because the lessons from it will give rise to everything we have now in society. Today we enjoy the blessings of independence and democracy because vicious conditions have been overcome and fought against by the people of our history and these heroes do not deserve to be forgotten. I think it is important that we know these episodes that made us today. What makes our country stronger and how we understand the true meaning of patriotism. Another topic is nudity in art. We have chosen an article and written a reflection on it. I chose The Nude in Art. To me there may be other reasons for depicting nudity in art beyond those mentioned in the article; one of the most common reasons is shock value.
