Topic > Critical Review of the Film Bend Like Beckham

In the 2002 film, Bend Like Beckham I expected the film to be about David Beckham or the protagonist achieving a skill level equal to or aspiring to that of Mr. Beckham. Instead the film inserted a misleading title and it turned out to be a dramatic statement about how different races and genders are treated and judged based on appearance and cultural heritage. There are a few sub-plots within the film, but the main plot can be followed at any time with very little context. The main plot is about how Jess (the main character) wants to play football but can't due to her heritage, but Jules, her friend, is trying to help her overcome her obstacle as she wants to be recruited to play women's football professional. In Bend It like Beckham there are some main characters and secondary characters. The main protagonist is Jess (Parminder Nagra), a 17-year-old Indian footballer. The supporting cast includes Jules (Keira Knightley), Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), Tony (Ameet Chana), Jess' mother (Gurinder Chadha) and father (Anupam Kher) and her sister Pinky (Archie Panjabi). The actors were okay, nothing special, I don't think the acting was phenomenal but it was mediocre unlike bigger budget films, that excludes Joe and Tony. Joe's acting was sloppy and he seemed half asleep most of the time, while Tony had a few scenes where his lines seemed forced and less than fluid. The cinematography in this film is mediocre, but gets really bad when the football senses are affected. . The camera does not follow the ball well and the movements of the football seem staged and slowed down to help the cameraman, who however does nothing. The goal scenes are also pretty bad as when there is a goal it is filmed at a slow frame like 18fps but plays back at the normal 24fps. This inconsistency takes you out of the film and drags it down. The film also had some positives: the simple plot sends a profound message about exploring how oppression in different cultures is that people face. This message takes the film to a deeper level than expected, even though the expectation was subverted from the beginning, the film picks up with a profound message that presents as much reality as possible. The message of the film shows how people of culture are treated by their parents while being influenced to do differently in the Western world. There is also some semi-racist comedy that is funny and tasteful. Please note: this is just an example. Get a custom paper from our expert writers now. I think it has a good message, but the genre, budget and some of the cinematography combined mean I wouldn't watch this film in my time. This movie has some aspects of all but doesn't focus on any of them. Ultimately it was a mediocre movie with funny parts but overall it ended up as a mediocre and forgettable movie.
