Topic > Alcoholism: An Enemy of Abandonment - 1033

The power of being able to fall into a trance where reality is destroyed and only emotions exist seems very attractive. However, using a substance to fall into a trance will only be harmful because the substance will create health risks. This substance, a toxic liquid, known as “Alcohol” has destroyed many lives. For example, Sherman Alexie, a Native American writer, experiences a lot of pain from alcohol. He writes about the suffering he experienced in his fiction novel, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and talks about the struggle in his interviews. In addition to Alexie's stories, Diane Sawyer, a journalist, investigates a Native American tribe and discovers that alcohol abuse is common on the reservation. Alcoholism is portrayed as an enemy to Native Americans; however, alcohol becomes a tool that causes Alexie to mature as an individual. Therefore, alcoholism through the author's life story can educate society to care about communities struggling with alcohol abuse. Alcoholism creates pain in the Native American community in Pine Ridge as many civilians put each other in danger. The reservation is a small community where the tribes live, but because the place is very small, many adults are unable to use their money productively. As a result, many adults spend their money purchasing alcohol and drinking heavily. For example, Sawyer says, “over four million beers are sold on the reservation” (Children of the Plains). Because many Native Americans consume alcohol, many deaths and child abuse occur. For example, Sawyer interviewed a young girl who had lost her father to drunk driving (Children of the Plains). This quote from Sawyer's video supports alcoholism as a problem...at the heart of the paper...society learns that the only way to heal a community struggling with alcohol is to start with future generations because they are the ones who will lead the community. Society can raise awareness among young middle and high school students about the dangers of alcohol. Lessons and advertising can represent the disadvantages of drinking, especially if you are underage. These support services will enable young people to end the cycle of alcoholism as the enemy and transform alcoholism into a means of celebration.
