The NCAA makes more than a billion dollars every year during March Madness thanks to all the sponsors and other advertising. College athletes need to be paid because on average they train up to five days a week during the season and train a lot in the off-season as well. They also have to attend school every day, which doesn't give college athletes time to have a fully functioning job to purchase groceries and other expenses. Athletes only have the scholarship to use for other payments if they have one and perhaps their parents can't pay for the apartment and other expenses. So they might need some extra money. During the month of March, college basketball teams play all month to win the national championship and celebrate when they achieve it. But the real winners of the tournaments are their corporate sponsors, the broadcasters and, ultimately, the NCAA itself. (Athletes should be paid) March Madness has become a huge business bringing in more than a billion dollars from the games, mostly because of the $700,000 advertising fee for a 30-second spot during the final four. Athletes' conferences also receive a lot of money when their teams advance deeper into the tournament. Overall, the NCAA brings in about $6 billion across all of its college events. The NCAA is said to have used only about four percent of its money on employees, and the rest is distributed among colleges as athletic and academic scholarships.
