Topic > Characteristics of qualitative and quantitative methods

Qualitative and quantitative researchers have shown contrasting ways of approaching research. Some researchers prefer qualitative evaluation to quantitative evaluation and vice versa. Furthermore, it is common for the terms qualitative and quantitative to be used together in research. But both methods, when done correctly, provide good research. Furthermore, both methods have their differences and unique features. In this article I will define three of these characteristics in a quantitative and qualitative research design and discuss and compare their differences. (Smith & Davis, 2010) A characteristic of qualitative research is that it is conducted in a natural setting. Consequently, when a researcher conducts research, he or she commits to dedicating time to fieldwork. This will ensure that their claims are not biased or incorrect. Additionally, their research settings are typically meeting room or classroom-like settings. Furthermore, it is usually limited to a smaller group. As a result, it allows the search to be more personal. (Smith & Davis, 2010) Another characteristic of qualitative research is that it is personal and contains very little scientific terminology. For example, researchers try to understand human issues and problems or why humans behave in a certain way. This type of empathetic approach in quantitative research is a truly unique feature. Also, in qualitative research, researchers interact with participants or sample, this is very important because they need to observe their behavior. As a result, the search becomes more up close and personal. This type of approach is what makes qualitative research unique or different from quantitative research. But both qualitative and quantitative research are based on hypotheses, and both, when done carefully, provide a good research. ReferenceHughes, C.
