The month of May is dedicated each year to the celebration of African American history. When you think of Black History Month, the first thing we all think of is the historic “I have a dream” speech. However, he did more than just present the speech we all know, he had moral values that he defended and was the leader of many civil rights movements. This man is known as Martin Luther King. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Jr.'s parents were the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. King Jr.'s father and grandfather were both ministers, and Martin's mother was a school teacher. He had a sister named Christine and a brother named Alfred. His mother taught him to read before he even went to school. Throughout his childhood, he was always a first-rate student. He skipped grades in elementary school, middle school and high school. He graduated from high school at age 15 and was accepted into Morehouse College in Georgia, a distinguished black institution in Atlanta. During his free time he preferred reading books, singing, riding a bicycle, playing football and baseball. He graduated from college and received his bachelor's degree in 1948 from Morehouse College. After graduation he became a minister and resided in Alabama. Martin Luther King studied theology at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He was named president of a predominantly white senior class; and received his BD in 1951. After his education at Cozer Theological Seminary, he decided to enroll in graduate studies at Boston University. It is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 15. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. While extremely involved with his family, his church, he has also served his community and country very well by standing up for his beliefs and rights. Throughout his life he demonstrated to so many people what he stood for and changed numerous lives because of it.
