The songs that I will dedicate in this play are for the character Macbeth. He is the most unique entity who constantly changes his personality and develops more evil traits. These songs will represent all the main characteristics of Macbeth and the events that led him to demonstrate and reveal what kind of person he is. Every crime he committed had a great consequence on his conscience. The lyrics or mood of the song will describe, in some way, Macbeth and his behavior in this play. The first song (opera) I chose is "O Fortuna" by Carl Orff. The atmosphere sets the scene and foreshadows that something evil is about to happen. Right at the beginning, the audience senses the presence of something evil and disgusting. It builds continuously until the end, when all evil will be unleashed upon the world. This song connects to the play because when Macbeth learns of the witches' prophecies, something evil is born in him. He begins to think about killing King Duncan and to have horrible images of him doing so. His thoughts when he heard the prophecies were: “If it be good, why do I yield to that suggestion/Whose horrible image loosens my hair/And makes my sitting heart beat in my ribs,/Against the use of nature? Present fears/Are less than horrible imaginings./My thought, whose murder is yet but fantastic,/So shakes my only state of man” (act 1, scene 3, lines 138-143). These evil thoughts accumulated until he finally killed the king. So Macbeth is evil. The second song is “I Want It All” by Queen. The lyrics express ambition to get what you want. Furthermore, the words “I want it all and I want it now” clearly show the speaker's aspiration and urgency. In this play, it is obvious on many occasions that... halfway down the page... I have a judgment here, that we do nothing but teach/harmful instructions which, once taught, return/to afflict the inventor: this impartial justice/praise the ingredients of our poisoned chalice.” (Act 1, scene 7, lines 8-12). It shows that he is afraid that if he kills the king, he will teach future generations to do the same thing to him and kill him. Therefore, he would be very upset and uneasy if he were to continue with the murder. In conclusion, Macbeth possesses many evil traits and is one of the most unique entities in the play. He is very ambitious but, on the other hand, he is also willing to commit a crime such as killing his king and his cousin, just to get the crown. After the witches' prophecies, all the darkness accumulated in his head. Therefore, all these songs are dedicated to Macbeth because it represents a specific part of Macbeth's life.
