The fast food industry in America has many drawbacks in terms of the cost of providing food to the American population. Because many people are ignorant of the process their food goes through to become the edible meal they consume, American companies easily take advantage of it. In class we discussed a “Bill of Food Rights”. I believe this is necessary to keep the food industry safe for the American public and environment. The main goal of my "Food Bill of Rights" is to ensure that the fast food industry has the best interests of the American people in mind when producing its food. Every time we purchase a product, we trust that both companies are honest with us about its contents and government regulations that do not always take the consumer's interest into account. The first element to include in my Food Bill of Rights is honesty. There are too many cases where American food has made people sick and even caused fatalities because consumers don't know what they're eating. If you truly examine the standards of what can be labeled as a particular food, the knowledge is truly shocking. Consider the current policy of the United States Department of Agriculture; only 40% beef is needed for a company to label their products as such (Taco Bell's Beef Problem). Further research shows that standards for meat in schools are lower than those for meat in fast food restaurants. Even with these outrageously low standards, there are still places to eat that don't meet the requirements to label their products. Just a few years ago, Taco Bell was sued because they claimed their meat was 88% beef. However, when their meat was inspected, it didn't even meet the required minimum standard of 40% set by... middle of paper... natural foods, but their organic food is very expensive. If we can make healthier food more accessible to the public, the obesity epidemic in this country will decrease. Works Cited Bacon, John. "Fast food workers strike, protest for higher pay."
