Catfish maintains an advantage over most fish due to its ability to walk on land. This useful adaptation comes from the pectoral spines that flex to fit your body during the walking motion. While the adaptation to walking on land is impressive, the ability to breathe on land is also advantageous. This ability comes from fish hills that have “highly vascularized arborescent organs that act as accessory respiratory structures” (Masterson 2007). Their gas bladder is also minimized to allow for stiffening so the fish do not collapse onto land (Masterson 2007). In addition to their voracious appetite, fish have other adaptations that also make them invasive. Fish can survive in waters where most fish cannot survive, such as hypoxic waters or muddy ponds. In addition to being nocturnal, these survival skills allow them to invade aquaculture farms and prey on fish stocks
