Discrimination and racism in “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer and “The Welcome Table” by Alice WalkerDiscrimination and racism are always a problem, but the difficulties that these women have had to deal with and suffer is something that is still being discussed. Understanding the fear, struggle, and hardships that black women went through during this time period is very important. Both “Country Lovers” by Nadine Gordimer and “The Welcome Table” by Alice Walker talk about race and the struggle to be accepted in society. The short story “Country Lovers” written by Nadine Gordimer, who received the 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature, writes about forbidden love and racial politics between a black girl and a white boy on a farm in South Africa. This story is set in the period when South Africa was struggling with racial segregation and is full of irony and a theme that is clear from the beginning and which is deeper than racism, but of love between two of opposite races. Thebedi and Paulus grew up playing together is childhood. He is the son of the farm owner and she was the daughter of a farm worker. Growing up, Paulus went to boarding school and Thebedi eventually dropped out of school and helped on the farm. It was known that “once white children go to school, they soon no longer play together.” (Clugston, 2010). When Paulus went to school, they were entering adolescence and body changes were rare for everyone. Paulus was a popular boy at school and at the "sister" school that the girls also attended.
