EMT firefighters may have duties that include firefighting, rescuing victims, and providing fire prevention education. Training an EMT allows them to respond to medical and trauma emergencies, care for patients, administer medications, and provide care to those who need it. Fire department EMTs are trained to extricate victims from wrecked vehicles and treat their injuries while transporting victims to the emergency room. When not on the scene of an emergency, firefighters work in fire stations, where they sleep, eat and remain on call during twenty-four-hour shifts. Many work more than forty hours a week. The work can be very dangerous. As a child I was always fascinated by fire trucks and firefighters. I imagine many would say what a kid isn't he? But now that I'm a teenager that fascination has transformed into a real, genuine and true interest. The idea of being able to help people, save a person's life, protect and save their possessions and treasures, is what really sparks my interest and desire to become a firefighter. I will consider joining the Explorers for the St. Lucie County Fire Department. Prospective firefighters only need a high school diploma before applying. But more and more firefighters are now requiring a two-year degree in fire science or fire prevention. And, as part of my research, I learned that a fire science degree can greatly increase a candidate's chances of finding a job. Indian River State College has a Fire Science Technology program, which is a two-year program. The Fire Science program leads to an associate degree and prepares students for careers in the fire service. Higher level education increases their technical knowledge and skills and prepares us for career advancements… mid-paper… especially for first responders. As I get older, I will now know to look into the following organizations for potential grants: professional associations (International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFF), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), etc.); St. Lucie County Fire Department; Large companies (Pepsi, Xerox, etc.); Unions, etc. I plan to work hard to reach peak physical shape and also work hard on all my tests and studies since doing this research has shown me that the "best" will be chosen for all job opportunities. So, while pursuing a career as a firefighter/EMT may not seem easy at all, I know that hard work, determination, and perseverance will pay off when I become a St. Lucie County firefighter/EMT. Who knows, maybe one day I will be the one to help minimize personal damage to your home or, more importantly, your life.!
