Topic > The Failures of Fundamentalism - 957

Fundamentalism is an express of Christianity: strong, bitter and undiluted. Fundamentalists believe that the Bible should be interpreted literally, not metaphorically. For them, it is God's direct word to humanity and the highest earthly authority. And so fundamentalists follow the Bible with unshakable certainty, as if it were God himself, and impose their interpretation of the book on society. But the certainty underlying fundamentalism is unjustified, leading them to mistakenly ignore the valid views of their opponents and the potential benefits that accrue from them. In the eyes of Christian fundamentalists, their actions protect the will of God; they are upholding the laws of the Supreme Being. Fundamentalists' core beliefs “[are] encapsulated under the rubric of “scriptural inerrancy,” the idea that the Bible is the perfect word of God, the clearest expression of God's plan for mankind (Marsden) . From this comes the concept of biblical literalism, which holds that "the historical events recorded in the Bible... are accurate", not parables or allegories: they believe that God spoke simply and clearly, not in confusing metaphors (Creationism). Accordingly, if the Bible is the literal and inerrant testimony of God's plan for humanity, and if God is humanity's ultimate authority, then humans should obey the laws of the Bible. By this reasoning, biblical norms should be applied over human laws and society's deviations from these norms, such as “attacks on traditional standards of family and sexuality…[posed by] changes in standards of public decency, aggressive feminism of the second wave, gay activism, and challenges to conventional family structures", you should...... middle of paper....... Because the discussion is not about who is right, but what is learned as a result and how these new truths can bring benefits to society. Quoted "Creationism has a greater basis in science". , 2011.
