Integrating literacy with different content areas can be a very constructive way to support literacy development in children. One way to integrate literacy with art is to select a book based on the class theme and extend an aspect of that book into an art project. Discuss connections between the project and the book with the children. Ask open-ended questions and allow children to make connections without giving them the answers. Literacy is integrated with music on many levels without having to make an effort to connect them. Kindermusik research tells us that “Listening is the first language modality that children acquire and provides a foundation for all aspects of language and reading development.” ("The Impact of Music"). Music also introduces lots of new vocabulary for children to explore and helps support phonological and phonemic awareness. So using music in class will help language development a lot. Integrating math and literacy may seem difficult to some, after all math is numbers. But mathematics is not just numbers. It's problem solving, measuring, patterns, shapes and so much more. Every time you give a child a problem to solve and use open-ended questions to prompt them, you are using literacy. One way to integrate math and literacy is with cooking activities. You will be able to analyze informal conversations by reading the recipe and asking questions along with the mathematical ability to measure. Science for young children should always be hands-on and not studying facts. Science for young children should involve asking questions, seeking answers, collecting data, and carrying out investigations. By doing these things you use language, promote conversation, stimulate thinking skills and... middle of paper... ld. You need to know when it's too much and don't put too much into one lesson or you run the risk of confusing children. Themes should be directed to the child and not planned a year in advance by the teacher. The teacher does not know if what interested last year's group will also interest this year's group. It is important to let children learn according to what interests them.
