Bulimia, known as bulimia nervosa, is a psychiatric illness and fatal eating disorder in which an individual believes he or she is fat or overweight. These individuals lose weight through unhealthy and dangerous methods of recurring episodes of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors. Bulimia often begins with a weight-loss diet, which leads to food deprivation and inadequate nutrition that trigger a hunger response. The individual then needs to eat and consume extreme amounts of calories within a few hours. Starting to feel guilty or ashamed leads to vomiting after meals, fasting, exercising too much, or abusing laxatives. A weight loss diet cycle is formulated, which over time becomes more compulsive and uncontrollable. The general desire to be thin and accepted seems to be the main cause of bulimia. Researchers estimate that one to three in 100 women will develop bulimia nervosa at some point in their lives. In men the diagnosis rate is only about a tenth of that in women.
