Primary source analysisMy main source is a report on the causes of the Ukrainian crisis and the current situation in Ukraine. The cause of this crisis is complicated. First, the country struggled with its identity due to independence. Ukraine has a population of only 45 million, but has faced many difficulties in dealing with its internal conflicts. It fails to build a strong political party, overcome corruption, or complete some types of economic reforms. All of its presidents tend to enable the oligarchs and seek greater control over the economy. By the end of 2010, the government controlled half of the country's GDP. Therefore political opponents have intensified and protest is urgent. In 2004, the attempt to overthrow the government, called the Orange Revolution, began. This revolution was caused by the rigged presidential election that elected Viktor Yushchenko as president. President Yushchenko has continued to exacerbate political and economic problems since his presidency. Almost secretly Ukraine was divided into three parts; the north and center are oriented by the western countries of Europe, while the southern and eastern Ukraine is oriented by Russia. Battling close ties with Russia, President Yanukovych managed to win the 2010 elections. However, corruption did not stop while he was in power. He won the election by accusing Tymoshenko, a highly regarded reformist, of abuse of power. It was reported that Yanukovych's family embezzled over $8 million per year for 3 years as president. Yanukovych made another mistake in late 2013. When he almost reached an agreement with the European Union on a trade association contract, he reversed his decision under pressure from Russia. He explains... halfway through the paper... that he shouldn't be involved in the crisis with the military. There is a better way to resolve the conflict. The most important thing for the United States is to follow the will of the Ukrainian people. I think the Ukrainians also don't want America to confront Russia militarily. It is beneficial neither for Ukraine nor for America. Nobody wants another war in their homeland. Decisions in Ukraine should not be based on the interests of Ukraine, Russia, Europe or the United States. It's about the will of the people to stop the riots and the violence. The United States should somehow engage politically in the issue. America should help rebuild Ukraine's government and political system. They should give support to a democratic party and make it strong enough to win the hearts of voters. The United States can also lend money to help the economy. Kind regards, Guanzhong Tao
