The author Wes and the incarcerated Wes both had high expectations of doing well in life from their mothers. However, when they were both young, it seemed that they did not live up to the expectations of their mothers, but rather those of the streets. Article one helps me understand the author Wes' story a little better because his mother expected him to have a high school education, which she feared Wes wouldn't have based on how he did in school. Therefore, he sent him to a military school. The second article helps me understand the story of the incarcerated Wes because his mother also had high expectations for him, however, her expectations for her son were higher than what he had for himself.
