Life in the 1930s was very different than today as it was a time of racism and segregation. Living with racism and segregation was different for all people in the 1930s. The same goes for Grant and Atticus too, their lives are quite different, but they are also similar. In To Kill a Mockingbird and A Lesson Before Dying, Atticus and Grant played important roles in their romances. Both Grant and Atticus played an important role in helping Tom Robinson and Jefferson, two people accused of something they did not do. In their novels, Atticus and Grant were similar and different in many ways such as; both are well educated, as well as being entrusted with great responsibilities, and both lead different lifestyles due to many factors. Atticus and Grant were both very passionate about learning and were both well educated. Grant had a great passion for learning and when his teacher knew that he wanted to learn, he hated Grant more than other children. In the novel Grant said: “If you want to learn, I will help you learn. Maybe this way I will be free, knowing that someone else took the burden. Well, well, do you want to learn? Well, well, here's the burden.”(Gaines 63) In this selection, Grant remembered how his teacher told him with his eyes, showing Grant that he would be better off if he didn't continue to learn. Even though Grant's teacher told him this, he still decided to go to college. Just as Grant was a very bright man, Atticus was also very intelligent. Atticus had a passion for learning and enjoyed reading with Scout. Atticus studied law in Montgomery, Alabama. Likewise Grant was educated but because he was black people had no respect for him. Grant and Atticus were given great responsibilities in their novels. They also shared a major difference for their time, that is, Grant was black and Atticus was white. In the 1930s, people were judged by the color of their skin, so even though Grant and Atticus are very similar, people at that time would say they are very different. In conclusion, Atticus and Grant were shown to be both similar and different as they were both well educated, were given great responsibilities and both live their lives differently due to their age and race..
