New Urbanism – A vision for sustainabilityNew Urbanism (NU) – a concept that changed the vision of how planners viewed the fabric of the city in overview. It is an approach that provides the tools to realize what is the key to sustainable city design. It provides the foundations that lead to the foundation of a society that harmonizes community life, nourishes nature and gives a new light to the human spirit to live in a world that satisfies everyone, with a sense of prosperity and a bright future at the same time, facing the threats of the modern world in the best and most efficient way. “New” meant a “renaissance” or revival of traditional urban planning to replace suburban sprawl, rather than the imposition of something entirely new. This time-tested resurgence of traditional urbanism, such as that found in the most successful neighborhoods of Australia's urban centres, must continually adapt, in response to changing circumstances such as recently recognized ecological and resource constraints, the post-industrial economy and the decrease in family size. (Kaufman, 2006) The term New Urbanism (NU) was coined in the late 20th century. “New Urbanism is promoted as a set of ideas to mitigate urban sprawl, encourage sustainable growth, and facilitate infill development.” (Garde, 2004). The focus of new urbanism is compact metropolitan areas that contain “multiple, but dense, walkable neighborhoods, connected by transit, bounded by regional and local park systems” (Loomis, 1999, p. 165). The phenomenon of new urban planning has been seen as the response to the original circumstances, the growth and urban development characterized by the continuous degradation of the quality of the environment, the fall of public property and the rapid diffusion... of paper... .. ..closer homes, residences, shops and services creates an economically efficient society and a more convenient and pleasant place to live. With all these things in mind a designer must always aim for sustainability. Sustainability includes aspects such as minimal environmental impact of development and operations, eco-friendly technologies, green transportation, respect for ecology and the value of natural systems, energy efficiency, reduced use of limited fuels , more local production, more walking, less driving. All of the above-mentioned postulates constitute the framework of NU and function in accordance with the emphasis on beauty, aesthetics, human comfort and the creation of a sense of place.
