Voting is one of the most important rights and duties that a citizen has. Throughout American history, people have fought to gain the right to vote. These people understood that voting gives citizens the power to influence the decisions of their leaders. This is invaluable power. However, many people do not exercise their right to vote. Today, more and more voters are staying home and silent on Election Day. In 2012, 76 percent of Minnesota residents who were eligible to vote participated in the presidential election. While that's a decent number of voters, the disappointing fact is that Minnesota had the best voter turnout in the entire country! Unfortunately, in many other states only five or six out of ten voters showed up to the polls. Clearly, many citizens choose not to vote. Now, some may forget to vote. Others may be unable to vote due to illness or other emergencies. But many people simply don't care. They may feel too busy to participate or, worse, that their vote "doesn't count."
