Childhood obesity is a difficult problem with the growth of our children today. Childhood obesity not only affects the child, but also the people around him. Childhood obesity causes serious health problems, from heart disease to diabetes. According to Farhat (2010), twenty years ago there were only a handful of children who were overweight, mostly due to a hormonal or genetic disorder. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2013), the number of obese children between the ages of 6 and 11 has increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 30% in 2011. There are so many questions to to answer and problems to solve. The health problems that affect children are that they are struggling with obesity. What parents should do to help their children overcome obesity. This article will address the causes and some solutions to childhood obesity. Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity in the United States has more than doubled in children ages 2 to 5. Childhood obesity more than tripled among children ages 6 to 11 and doubled among children ages 12 to 19. According to Jain (2004), the term obese is avoided due to its considerable negative connotations and the fear of stigma that accompanies the label. As a result, the term “overweight” is used to describe a child whose BMI is above the 95th percentile for his or her age and sex. A child between the 85th and 95th percentile is considered “at risk” of being overweight.2. Childhood obesity is related to poor eating habits, lack of exercise, family history of obesity, medical illnesses, and depression or other emotional problems. My program aims to educate young African American mothers about the risks they face if they have a child who becomes obese. My program includes steps that educate, empower, and ultimately overcome the childhood obesity epidemic. Solutions that could eradicate childhood obesity include educating young mothers about the five basic food groups, teaching them how to cook nutritious meals, and helping them locate community centers that provide a safe place for their children to do physical exercise. I also hope to encourage young mothers who have not completed high school to do so, as they are at greater risk of having an obese child.
