Topic > Nelson Mandela: Sacrifice and Leadership for Freedom

"True leaders must be prepared to sacrifice everything for the freedom of their people" (2013). This quote is one of Nelson Mandela's famous quotes relating to how some leaders are unfit to govern the people because they are not willing to sacrifice everything they have for the good of the people “Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mveso, Transkei , South Africa” (Mandela touches many lives). throughout his life. He also touched the lives of people who never met him face to face. Many people felt like they knew him by listening to his words and the actions he took to make South Africa a better place belief in the way he did things. He was an inspiring person who many people still try to live their lives by example. Nelson Mandela was born during a time in South Africa where Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was in charge of the country's system of racial separation imposed by the national party. Whites were treated to higher standards than other races. Mandela's birth set off a chain of events that would make living conditions for South Africans much better than anyone could have ever imagined. (2013) Mandela knew he was different the moment he started going to school. He grew up in a culture where he could live free. Mandela knew he wanted to make a difference in the world. In the article The Life and Times of Nelson Mandela we read: "Listening to elders' stories of the valor of his ancestors during the wars of resistance, he also dreamed of making his own contribution to his people's struggle for freedom" (2014). Mandela knew that God had a purpose in the world for him, and no matter what conflicts came his way, he would make a difference in the world. When Mandela started school he began to take note of segregation across the country. He was treated differently than other privileged students in his classes. He even had to change his birth name to Nelson because the teacher couldn't pronounce “Rolihlahla” and “…according to the custom of giving all schoolchildren “Christian” names” (2014). From this Mandela began to take note of his precedents. In Nelson Mandela's biography we read: "Mandela soon became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement, joining the African National Congress in 1942" (Mandela 2014). The goal of this group was to gain the support of masses of people to bring down the current government because the other tactics used by the groups were not yielding any results. The group has had many protests resorting to “boycotts, strikes, civil disobedience and non-cooperation” (Mandela 2014). Furthermore, he is known to have spent time in prison due to his beliefs and the South African government was afraid of his popularity and followers who believed in his words. Between 1956 and 1963 Mandela was arrested three times due to his protests and strikes. Upon his third arrest he and ten others were charged and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after spending 27 years incarnate. For the next four years, Mandela became president of the African National Congress and had many talks with the current president of South Africa FW de Klerk to find solutions for black South Africans, these talks eventually led to them getting more rights. Thanks to their communication with each other and their efforts to make South Africa better and with better living conditions, Mandela and President FW de Klerk were awarded the Peace Prize
