Forgetting is the inability to retrieve information. Forgetting occurs constantly throughout the human population. Since ancient times, psychologists have tried to determine the causes of forgetfulness. It is very difficult to study memory since there is no physical examination of the brain capable of mapping memory; we now have some theories about what is remembered. All we can do is measure what we can remember. Memory plays a fundamental role in our life. It can dictate our feelings, emotions and response to the environment. Studies on this topic will never be enough. This essay will discuss the four theories of forgetting and what we can do to counteract their effects.
