The Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) is a fully integrated lifeguard service providing its services to local government councils and land managers across Australia. Around 700 lifeguards monitor these beaches. They are leaders in developing the latest lifesaving tools and techniques, both in Australia and internationally. Through SLSA, the ALS regularly collaborates with organizations at the state and federal levels. This allows them to develop public policies and contribute to its implementation. Lifeguard training and structure: The Australian Life Saving Academy (ALA) partners with the ALS and is able to provide an ongoing staff development program to develop lifeguard skills and knowledge. This also allows for the linking of programs to national industry standards as set out in training packages. Lifeguards must undertake regular assessments of lifesaving skills and suitability. Simulations are run and used to test skills and knowledge to ensure staff are ready to deal with the public and prepared to deal with emergencies when they arise. The ALA employs the latest training and its accredited programs are constantly reviewed to ensure all role requirements are up to date.
