I remember being in high school and wearing school uniforms. It was nice to wake up in the morning and not have to think about what to wear. Every public school in Ohio should establish a standard school uniform policy because it strengthens discipline, equalizes all children, and would be easier on parents. A standard policy for school uniforms should be simplified. You do not need to wear custom embroidered clothing with your school or student name on it. Students, parents, teachers and other members of the facility know which school they are attending. A nice shoe, a polo shirt and khaki pants or skirt will do the job perfectly. Discipline is vital for schools to run smoothly. In a school environment, students must obey the rules and directions of their teacher. Sometimes students may forget or misunderstand who the authority figures are at school. When a school establishes a uniform policy, it reinforces who is responsible because these policies set the guidelines of expectations for each student. When students are dressed appropriately and have the tools they need to learn, they are on their way to success because they are no longer distracted by their clothes. Some people might say that clothing doesn't make a difference in how someone behaves, but it actually does. Professional clothing symbolizes respect and seriousness. That's why these dresses are worn to funerals, work, job interviews and church. Just like any other school committee, students can elect a president, vice president, secretary, etc. Students can then meet with the school board to collaborate on options regarding school uniforms. Once there are two or three options to choose from, the student uniform council president can vote with the entire student body to make a final decision. By having a student uniform committee, students will be able to help form a uniform that the majority of the student body will agree on. Establishing a school uniform policy for all Ohio schools can only be a good thing. Discipline will be re-established in schools. All students will be one step closer to equality among themselves and parents will be put at ease as the school year approaches each year.
