During my senior year of undergraduate studies at Wayne State University, I shadowed a pediatrician at a Henry Ford Medical Group center in Dearborn, MI. HFMG is part of Henry Ford Health Systems. Henry Ford Health Systems employs more than 23,000 employees while HFMG employs more than 1,300 physicians and senior researchers along with 3,100 non-physician providers and support staff. “The HFMG generates $750 million in net revenue, which represents approximately 33% of total HFHS provider revenue” (Kelley 2011). HFMG physicians specialize in over 40 different medical specialties and work in 30 different medical centers and 5 different hospitals in Southeast Michigan. Specialties include cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, multi-organ transplants and cancer treatment (henryford.com). The human resources department at Henry Ford Health Systems operates under an organized structure. The HFMG is organized as a blend of academic and group practice. The CEO, COO, presidents, and directors of the HFMG center lead it (Kelley 2011). The body that oversees the different departments, including the Human Resources department, is an elected Board of Directors (Figure 1). Figure 1 can help visualize all this. The head of the human resources department is also the senior vice president and is considered to be at the top of the administration totem pole. “HR directors are key members of the top administrative team in many health systems, and most report to the CEO, reflecting the industry model. Positioning at that level of top management promotes better institutional decisions by encouraging all other directors to give weight to...... middle of document ......rning, 2010.- HFHS HR.
