Richard M. NixonNixon was a brilliant student and although he had difficulty growing up, he was very dedicated at what he did and had a bright future. At the age of 17, Nixon first attended Whittier College in September 1930. He especially enjoyed student government classes and was even elected student class president, which led to his interest in becoming involved in politics. After graduation, Nixon joined the Navy. He served on a naval air transport and was promoted to lieutenant commander before the end of the war (World Book, Inc. page 434). After his service in the Navy, Nixon ran for a congressional position. He campaigned and told people that Voorhis, his competitor, was a communist; he won the election without a doubt. Now, as a representative of the United States, he dealt with the Marshal Plan and other foreign aid programs (page 434). Nixon did very well on his cases and was at the peak of his career, then ran for US senator in 1950 and won by more than 700,000 votes (Page 435). During these elections he accused his competitors of having associated with the communists; even if there were no real investigations into those accusations. People saw him as strong, a republican with good intentions for our country. Having people's attention was a good thing, but he didn't always have it. For a time, when he was running for vice president alongside General Dwight D. Eisenhower, his Democratic opponents accused them of spending campaign funds on personal interests (page 435). People thought Nixon might ruin Eisenhower's chances of winning the election and wanted him to withdraw from the campaign. On September 23, 1952, Nixon announced his personal finances on television and radio, demonstrating that he did not have us... middle of paper... nuclear weapons (Page 437). During those times pollution was affecting water, land and animals, so Nixon took up residence at the Environmental Protection Agency. Even while president; Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first astronauts to set foot on the Moon, while in space Nixon told them “Because of what you have done, the heavens have become part of man's world” (NASA Administrator, NASA official Brian Dunbar).
