I. IntroductionThis legal research paper is based on Elisia JP Gatmen's discussions in her article, Academic Exploitation: The Adverse Impact of College Athletics on the Educational Success of Minority Student-Athletes from a Legal Aspect. The purpose of this article is to convey how being a minority athlete can be a double-edged sword. To provide some background on this issue, I will first summarize and write about articles I have read that convey the perception of minorities in sports, then I will explain the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) exploitation issues with minorities in athletics, and finally connect the legal aspect of this issue with some recommendations that college sports institutions could implement in the future. I chose this topic because I can really identify with the many concepts discussed regarding this issue. I myself am a Black athlete who played AAU basketball, five varsity sports at Dr. Phillips High School, and ran track and field for a division one school at Florida Atlantic University my freshman year of college. Considering my personal account, I think it's worth noting that reading several articles on this concept was an eye-opening experience and gave me answers to questions I had about minorities (like me) and athletics. II. Perceptions of Minorities in Athletics There is an old adage that goes “it takes a village to raise a child.” However, the perception of how to raise a child varies from village to village. In the average black community, raising children to become doctors, lawyers, businessmen, astronauts, engineers and teachers is not as revered as raising a child to become a professional athlete.
