How would you feel if someone came into your neighborhood and destroyed your homes? So how would you expect Sumatran orangutans to feel? Sumatran orangutan homes in North Sumatra are being destroyed at a high rate, the main problem being due to fires and other urban developments. A road construction project in North Sumatra threatens one of the largest areas of orangutan habitat. Not only do the fires burn many areas of orangutan habitat, but many of these apes were thought to have burned to death as they were unable to escape the fire's flames. Although there have been legal laws to protect orangutans in Indonesia since 1931, they are still caught in the wild and kept in homes as status symbols. In some regions, Sumatran people were hunted for food. Research conducted by the Global Wildlife Monitoring Network shows that the lack of illegal profits poses a grave danger to orangutans.
