Topic > Pick And Pay Case Study: Pick N Pay - 1074

The JSE listed company (Ltd) that I decided to focus on is Pick n Pay. I chose this company because since the first store opened in 1967, 941 stores have opened across the country in South Africa (FastMoving, 2012), which leads me to believe that this specific franchise has a very good sense of corporate sustainability.Pick n The remuneration is very attentive to sustainability according to the triple bottom line. They make sure to constantly take care of their customers, take care of the environment, and ultimately make a profit. To take care of its customers, Pick n Pay has released a customer rewards program called “Smartshopper”. The program, launched in March 2011, allows the franchise to better know and understand each customer by observing each customer's purchasing habits and references. The company has direct access to many Smartshopper customers via email and/or text message, which allows the company to communicate with its customers in a more engaging way. Pick n Pay asks customers for feedback and sends targeted marketing communications directly to them. This is done in a bid to both design and execute marketing campaigns and product ranges that are more relevant to its customers by extracting insights from data about customer purchasing habits, and to help the business increase its sales volumes , which will ultimately lead to increased profits (FastMoving, 2012). Pick n Pay is very concerned about the happiness and satisfaction of its customers, which is why each franchise has a customer service line where customers can call and/or email to order to get all the help/attention of they may need regarding their complaints, questions, suggestions and comp...... half of the document ...... for a more sustainable lifestyle (PicknPay, 2014). One of the ways Pick n Pay is doing this is by promoting a "green initiative" called "One Million Acts of Green". The customer is invited to go to the Pick n Pay Facebook page, where they can scroll through a list of different daily actions that promote a sustainable and green future. They can then attempt to perform one or more of these acts in their daily lives and are encouraged to share the initiative with friends, colleagues and relatives. When it comes to profit, the Pick n Pays share price on the JSE is up 29% over the past year. Franchise data for March showed a turnaround in margins from 17.4% last year to 17.5%. Sales increased by 7.7% to R63.1 billion. Trading profit improved 18.5% (and 34.4% on a comparable basis after three consecutive years of decline) (BDLive, 2014).
